If you feel alcohol isn't serving you anymore, then it's time to trust your gut and LET IT GO

Feb 15, 2021

So Diet Coke and I broke up. I was getting my massage last month, and surprisingly the massage therapist was sober too. Crazy how the world brings people into our lives that we need to learn from. When we're open and confident about our decision not to drink, then we'll attract those same types of people into our lives. But that's a topic for a different day.

Back to my story. I've always loved Diet Coke. I didn't' think it was that big of a deal because it has zero calories, and it's not going to kill me. Well, she told me some stories, and they're all stories I've heard before, so I knew it was time. Diet Coke and I are taking a break for good.

Why am I telling you this? I know that breaking any bad habit can be hard initially, but since I've been sober for over four years now, I forgot what it's like to take away your crutch. My mind doesn't go to alcohol anymore. I've broken that connection and have made a new neural pathway in my brain. But that Diet Coke connection is strong, and the last four weeks have been a little tough. The thoughts of "I deserve it" or "just one won't hurt" came creeping in, and I thought, holy sh*t, this is what you mothers are experiencing. I get it now. I mean, I always get it, but I wasn't in the midst of it anymore.

One last thing, drink the Diet Coke or whatever you want that isn't alcohol. In fact, I encourage it, but when you know that something hasn't been serving you for a while, it's time to trust your gut and let it go. The same thing applies to alcohol. If you feel that alcohol needs to go, then it's time to take action and make a plan.

For me, I replaced Diet Coke with Zevia. And there will be no more Diet Coke stocked in the fridge. If you're struggling to stay consistent on this journey, I will encourage you to do the same. Remove alcohol from your house and replace it with another fun beverage.
